Full Room Design vs Interior Design Consultation: Which Do You Need?
Written by Catherine Seagrave
Not sure whether you need a full interior design service or a one-off consultation? We help you work out which is right for your project, your budget, and where you are right now.
You've finally decided something has to change. The living room has felt 'almost right' for three years. The extension is going ahead and you're staring at an architect's plan with absolutely no idea what happens next. Or maybe you've just moved in and the whole house feels like a blank, slightly overwhelming canvas.
You know you want help. But what kind?
This is one of the questions we get asked most at The Living House - and it's a good one. Because choosing the wrong type of support at the wrong moment can leave you spending money you didn't need to, or - worse - not getting nearly enough help when you really needed it.
So let's break it down properly.
What's the actual difference?
At its simplest: a full room design service takes you from a blank slate to a complete, finished vision for your space. A design consultation gives you expert input at a specific moment in your project - a focused session that cuts through the noise and gets you moving again.
Both are genuinely valuable. Neither is better than the other. It just depends on where you are, what you need, and - honestly - how much of the decision-making you want to hand over to someone else.
Ask yourself these questions
1. Where are you in your project?
If you're at the very beginning - perhaps looking at an empty room, a newly purchased home, or a space that's finally getting its overhaul - a full design service is almost certainly what you need. You don't just need answers; you need a plan, a vision, a shopping list, and someone to hold the whole thing together.
If you're already mid-project - you've got builders booked, an architect's drawings in hand, or you've been renovating for months and hit a wall - a consultation can be transformative. You don't need to start from scratch. You need clarity on the decisions in front of you, right now.
2. How much of the room are you changing?
Updating a whole room - new furniture, a new layout, a new look - calls for a comprehensive approach. Changing everything piecemeal, without a clear plan and a coherent design vision, is one of the most common reasons rooms never quite come together.
If you're tackling a whole room, invest in a service that gives you the whole picture.
If you have one or two specific decisions to make - where does the sofa go, how do I zone this open-plan space, is this kitchen layout going to work for our family - a focused session with the right people can give you everything you need in an hour.
3. How much guidance do you actually want?
This is the question people are sometimes reluctant to ask, but it matters enormously.
Some clients come to us knowing broadly what they love - they've got a clear Pinterest board, a strong sense of style, they just need help pulling it into a workable plan. Others genuinely want to hand over the creative decisions, trust the process, and be presented with a finished design they can fall in love with. Neither approach is wrong. But they suit different services.
A full design service is right for you if you want expert designers to own the creative direction, curate your moodboards, specify every element, and deliver a complete vision. A consultation is right for you if you're confident in your direction but need expert eyes on a specific problem.
4. What's your budget for the project overall?
If you're spending tens of thousands on a renovation or extension, the cost of a comprehensive design service is a small percentage of your total outlay - and arguably the thing most likely to save you from expensive mistakes. Getting layout decisions, furniture placement, or material choices wrong at the planning stage costs far more to fix once builders have left.
If you have a tighter budget or a smaller scope, a well-chosen consultation can deliver significant value: clarity, confidence, and the ability to move forward without second-guessing yourself at every turn.
5. How long have you been stuck?
If you've been staring at your living room for two years, unable to commit to a sofa, a rug, or a paint colour, that's not indecision - that's a sign you need more support than a single session. You need a clear plan, a considered design, and someone to make the vision feel real and achievable.
If you've been moving forward confidently but have hit a specific snag - a decision you can't seem to make, a layout that isn't working, a renovation choice that's keeping you up at night - a consultation is exactly the right tool.
What does each look like at The Living House?
Full room design: The Complete Design
The Complete Design is our most comprehensive service, and it exists for exactly those moments when you want someone to take the whole thing off your plate.
You work with two experienced interior designers - Catherine and Becky - who begin by really understanding how you live: your family, your habits, the things you love, the things that aren't working. From there, they develop your optimal layout, define your design direction through personalised inspiration boards, and bring everything together in a complete Design Dossier: floorplan, moodboard, 2D visualisation, and a fully curated shopping list sourced across the full market, from Facebook Marketplace to Soho Home.
There's also a walkthrough video from your designer explaining the reasoning behind every decision - because understanding why a space works makes it so much easier to execute with confidence. And once your design lands, you have two weeks of post-design support and one round of refinements built in.
It's the complete picture. And for clients who are ready to actually transform their room rather than think about transforming it, it's exactly what they need.
"We had been neglecting our lounge space for over four years because we wanted an elegant, grown-up room but had no idea where to start. The whole process was easy from beginning to end. The design plans, including a very useful video, were detailed and it was brilliant being able to make alterations along the way to achieve the exact vision we were looking for. The plans were also very useful for our builders to work from. We especially loved the click-to-buy shopping list, which made completing the room so simple and stress-free. We're absolutely delighted with the final result and have already briefed them on our next project!"- Nicola, ★★★★★ via Trustpilot
Starting from £2,400 for rooms up to 20sqm (price confirmed during your Discovery Call based on your space).
Design consultation: The Power Hour
The Power Hour is a focused 60-minute session with two expert designers - bringing real clarity to a specific moment in your project.
It's built for people who are already moving - mid-renovation, planning an extension, or at a decision point where getting the next steps right really matters. You complete a pre-call questionnaire so Catherine and Becky arrive prepared and ready to get straight to the heart of your challenge. The session is recorded so you can revisit every recommendation, and you receive a personalised written action plan outlining your specific next steps and design decisions.
No vague encouragement. No mood boards you'll never look at again. Just clear, expert direction and the confidence to move forward.
"We really appreciated how much ground we were able to cover in the hour, and the dossier you've put together is beautifully presented and very useful for us to refer back to. It was particularly reassuring to arrive at a layout that feels both practical for everyday family life and aligned with the overall atmosphere we're hoping to create in the house. The discussion around the different zones and the way they connect was especially valuable." - Omneya, ★★★★★ via Trustpilot
Our clients regularly tell us it rescues renovations from costly mistakes - and that's not an exaggeration. When you're investing in a new kitchen, an extension, or a whole-house renovation, getting layout decisions right before the builders move in is invaluable.
£475 for the session.
Still not sure which is right for you?
That's exactly what our free Discovery Call is for.
It's a no-commitment conversation - a chance for us to understand where you are, what you're trying to achieve, and what level of support would genuinely help you most. We'll be straight with you about which service is the right fit, and if neither is quite right, we'll tell you that too.
There's no hard sell. Just honest advice from designers who care about getting it right.
