How to design a kids room to last

Written by Sophie Clemson

When designing a kid's bedroom, you want it to last for years to come and have longevity. We know that children go through many phases, from liking dinosaurs one minute to football the next. As they grow and go through different likes and dislikes, it’s impossible to constantly make changes to their bedroom. We’re sharing our tips to design a kids bedroom that will last for years to come and grow with them.

  1. Avoid being too themed

  2. Wall sticker decals

  3. Go for a neutral base

  4. Always have plenty of storage

  5. Adjustable kids furniture

  6. Be playful with the accessories in your kids bedroom

Avoid being too themed

Themes are great and can look amazing however, the downside of going overly themed with your kids bedroom is that they can date quite quickly. As your children grow and develop different interests, their beautifully themed bedroom may not be as fitting as it once was. Of course, you want your kids bedroom to reflect their personalities and what they love, but you can incorporate these without going wall to wall with a theme. Instead, bring in a subtle nod to a theme with smaller and more affordable pieces such as bedding, cushions, blankets, and artwork. All of these pieces can be easily changed as your child grows and has new interests.

Wall sticker decals

Wall sticker decals are perfect for a kid's bedroom. Wall stickers are great to bring in what they are loving right now, but they can easily be removed and changed when you want to refresh and update their bedroom. Wall sticker decals can work great when you’re designing a nursery too. You could go for a neutral wall colour and bring the walls to life with fun decals. We recommend taking a look at Etsy for decals, as they have some beautiful designs.

Go for a neutral base

We think a children's bedroom should be full of fun and colour. However, that doesn’t mean you have to go bright with the paint colour. If you go for a neutral base, you can bring the colour in with the soft furnishings and decorative pieces, which are easier to change as your child grows. If you buy solid wood furniture, you can upcycle and paint it throughout the years, this is a great way to reuse and repurpose. You can have fun with painting the furniture too by going for a strong pop of colour and some funky handles.

Always have plenty of storage

When designing kid bedrooms for our customers, one of the main considerations is storage, as children come with lots of stuff! You will most likely want to store toys in their bedroom, which only seem to get larger as the years go on. If you buy furniture pieces that have plenty of storage in the beginning, they will last throughout their toy phase. As children's bedrooms are usually the smallest rooms within the home, one tip is to use the height of the room to get the most out of the space, such as with tall shelving units and wall shelves.

Adjustable kids furniture

Kids bedroom furniture can be costly therefore, adjustable furniture is a brilliant option to explore for longevity. A desk is one piece of furniture your child is most likely going to need as they get older, so it's worth choosing an adjustable desk. The Pahl desk from IKEA is really affordable and can be set at three different heights, making it a fantastic desk for kids as they grow throughout their childhood. If you’re considering built-in furniture, bear in mind that this can be quite costly and tricky to change in the future. If you're looking at the built-in option, discuss it with your carpenter to see if there are any clever ways to adjust the built-in furniture to make it more future proof.

Be playful with the accessories in your kids bedroom

Be playful and fun with the smaller pieces in your kid's bedroom that are less costly to change in the future. Go for an interesting rug, artwork, or bedding that will bring the room together and bring your child’s personality through. If you’re looking to spend more on quality soft furnishings, such as a bedspread, go for something that has multiple colours within the design so that it can be used for years to come as you update your child's bedroom. We particularly love this beautiful patchwork velvet bedspread from Oliver Bonas, which would look fabulous and vibrant in a kid's bedroom.
