5 interior tips to design a kids’ shared bedroom

Written by Sophie Clemson

Designing a kids shared bedroom can be a tricky task. You want both of your children to love it and feel like they have their own space, but most importantly, it needs to be practical too. An important factor when designing your children’s shared bedroom is that you want it to be fair, with each child having an equal amount of space to call their ‘own’ and showcasing both of their personalities. We’ve shared our top 5 interior design tips to inspire you when designing your kids' shared bedroom.

  1. Maximise the floor space with bunk beds

  2. Use colour blocking to zone areas within your kids’ shared bedroom

  3. How to divide your children’s shared room

  4. Showcase your children's individual interests

  5. How to make your kids’ shared bedroom flow and be cohesive

Maximise the floor space with bunk beds

In any kid's bedroom, you want to make the most of the floor space so that there is plenty of room to play. Making the most of the space is even more important when your children are sharing a bedroom. That's where bunk beds are a great solution and a way of using the height in the room to gain extra floor space for everything else you need to fit in the room. If there's scope to change the layout in the future or you plan on moving, it's worth exploring detachable bunk beds for longevity. The Pensham detachable bunk bed from The Cotswold Company is a lovely design in either midnight blue or white that will last for years to come.

Use colour blocking to zone areas within your kids’ shared bedroom

Colour blocking is a fantastic paint technique to zone areas in a room and works brilliantly in a kid's shared bedroom. You can really experiment and have fun with this one! One of the great things about colour blocking is that it doesn't have to cost the earth either, you can pick up an affordable tin of paint and create something wonderful on the walls. You could paint a strip where your children's beds are and go over the ceiling to create a cosy feel, or you could paint a cosy reading nook, the possibilities are endless.

How to divide your children’s shared room

Depending on the ages of your children, you may want to divide the room to give both of them their own space. It doesn’t always have to be a stud wall, which may not even be an option depending on where the windows are in the room. There are some really clever ideas and hacks to create privacy while still keeping the room feeling open. IKEA is always a great place to start when it comes to furniture for kids rooms, and the famous Kallax unit makes for a fantastic divider. It incorporates storage, which is always welcome, while creating a partition in the room (of course, we recommend making sure you have secured the unit to the wall for safety). Depending on the style you’re trying to achieve in your kids bedroom, wooden slats work great to divide a space. They will also help to add height to the room as they are installed from floor to ceiling, and B&Q have made it easy with their slatted room divider. Perfect if you’re going for a cool and contemporary look.

Showcase your children's individual interests

Your children will most likely have different interests and, of course, their own personalities. If you're wondering how you're going to create a room they both love, don't worry, it can be done! Catherine achieved this in her twin boys bedroom brilliantly. They both support different football teams, but by using colour blocking, she designed a bedroom her twins both love, even if they do support different teams! Mixing your children's favourite colours throughout the space is one way to go, or you can add their favourite things through cushions, wall decals, artwork, and accessories. This will make your children’s room last for years to come, as it will be easy to adapt in the future as they grow and what they're into changes without having to completely transform the room.

How to make your kids’ shared bedroom flow and be cohesive

You can still have both of your children's personalities shining through their bedroom and make the room look well put together and cohesive. Here are a few tips to create a flow in their shared room.

  • Choose the same beds and don’t be afraid to be bold, perhaps opt for a bright colour for fun or an interesting fabric to cover the headboards (you can always reupholster the headboards if they grow out of the design)

  • Choose a colour palette throughout the space, this could be a neutral base with fun pops of accent colours

  • Go for one large rug that combines both spaces to bring it together. A rug can double up as a play area for your children too!
