How to design a hallway: interior design tips for a stylish & practical space

Written by Sophie Clemson

A hallway is the first impression of your home, it sets the tone the moment you walk through the door. But great hallway design isn't just about looks (though of course we think that's rather important!). It also needs to work hard practically, especially in busy family homes: think storage for shoes and coats, a spot for keys, and surfaces that can handle the daily chaos of coming and going. We're sharing our expert interior design tips to help you make the most of your hallway so that it creates a wow first impression whilst still working for everyday life.

Hallway storage ideas for busy family homes

Let's start with storage, because getting the practicalities right is everything. Consider what you need to store in your hallway right from the very first stages of designing. There's nothing worse than completing a room, stepping back to admire how beautiful it looks, then realising it's style over function and isn't going to work for everyday life. When you're rushing out the door for work or the school run and need somewhere to grab the school bag and sports kit, good storage makes all the difference. So prioritise it from the start.

This could be a sideboard by the door rather than an open console table, or making the most of an understairs cupboard by fitting pull-out drawers or other clever storage solutions to use every inch of that space. A hallway tidy with room for shoes and hooks for coats can work brilliantly too. There are some lovely freestanding designs available, or budget and space permitting, build one in to create a boot room feel.

How to choose a hallway colour scheme

Choosing a colour scheme for your hallway can feel overwhelming, as it's the first area you'll most likely see and you need to consider the flow into the rooms it links to. Depending on your style, why not have a little fun and choose an eye-catching wallpaper? This could cover the walls and carry on through to the stairs and landing, or you could mix it with panelling below. This works especially well if you have a traditional property, as panelling adds instant character.

When painting your hallway, one thing our customers often find tricky is paint placement. There can be so many stopping and starting points in a hallway: the stairs, bannisters, architraves, door frames and skirting boards, and knowing where one colour ends and another begins can quickly feel like a puzzle. It's one of those things that's tricky to visualise on your own, but much easier to work through with an expert eye, and it's something we love helping our customer get just right. Our Colour Fix service is perfect for exactly this, walking you through precisely where each colour should start and stop and taking the guesswork out of the process completely.

It's also important to choose the right paint finish for your hallway. As a high traffic area with constant comings and goings, especially with children who have a habit of touching every single wall. You'll want a durable, scrubbable finish that can handle the everyday. We've shared our recommended finishes from a range of brands in our Instagram video here.

Hallway flooring ideas

The right flooring can really give your hallway the wow factor! If you want to do something a little different or opt for a pattern, the hallway is a great place to do it. If your hallway is a closed space and has doors separating the other rooms, you have more freedom to be bold, so why not go for it? If you have a traditional home, bringing back the character with Minton tile flooring can look beautiful. You can even achieve this look with LVT style flooring, as one of our customers did using Karndean, and the result looks fabulous and hard-wearing too!

If your hallway is open and flows into other spaces such as the kitchen, we recommend choosing a flooring that can carry through into those adjoining rooms. Wooden flooring works brilliantly for this, whether that's LVT, engineered wood or laminate. These types of flooring are also practical for a hallway as they can be easily wiped clean of muddy footprints, compared to opting for carpet.

How to layer hallway lighting for maximum impact

Lighting can make a big impact on a hallway and how it feels. We love to see a statement pendant in a hallway as it draws the eye upwards, which visually adds height. Don't be afraid to go large and really make a feature of it, as a fitting that is too small will simply look lost.

But it doesn't have to stop at the ceiling light. Layer the lighting with a table lamp or two on a sideboard or console table, and add a floor lamp if you have the space. Wall lights are also a great addition, placed either side of a mirror above a piece of furniture, they can really complete the look and style the area beautifully.

If you're short on plug sockets, there are some brilliant rechargeable lamps available now that need no sockets at all, along with wall lights that don't need to be wired into the wall, giving you even more opportunity to bring in layers of light.

How to choose and position a hallway mirror

A hallway is a perfect spot for a mirror, as it helps bounce light around and can make a small space feel larger. Mirrors also serve a practical purpose, allowing you to quickly check your appearance before leaving the house. Placing a mirror over a console table can complete the styling, turning an empty wall into a focal point and tying the space together. Just like with lighting, avoid choosing a mirror that is too small. Make sure it balances well with the size of the furniture it sits above, and position the mirror so it’s centered on the piece of furniture rather than the wall.

How To Design Your Hallway

Hallway art work ideas

Adding artwork to your hallway walls brings personality into your home, and what better space than the hallway, where your home can begin to tell your story? It could be artwork of your favourite holiday destination, a meaningful place, a family gallery wall (we particularly love the timeless look of black and white family photos), or simply a piece of art you adore. Consider the frames, too, these could be decorative with a bobbin or wavy edge, or perhaps an antique brass finish to add warmth. Just like a mirror, artwork placed above a piece of furniture always looks lovely. You could even add a picture light above to make it a true feature and complete the look.

Hallway runner and rugs

Rugs can complete a space, and a hallway is the perfect place for a rug or a runner. We recommend opting for a washable rug, being a hallway, in case of any muddy footprints, you don't have to worry and can simply throw it in the washing machine. A runner will also help to elongate your hall and make it feel bigger. If you have a fairly large hallway, choose a large rug to work with the dimensions of the space. This could be placed partly under a console table or sideboard; we recommend tucking the front two feet of the furniture onto the rug. A rug is a great opportunity to add colour and pattern into your hallway too, especially if you're not wanting to commit to a wallpaper but still looking to add interest and warmth.

A well-designed hallway doesn't happen by accident, it's the result of thinking through both the practical and the beautiful in equal measure. From clever storage solutions and the right flooring to layered lighting, a statement mirror and a well-chosen rug, every element plays its part in creating an entrance that works hard and looks wonderful. Remember, your hallway is the very first thing you and your guests see when you walk through the door, so it deserves just as much love and attention as any other room in your home.
