Small budget big impact changes for Autumn

Written by Catherine Seagrave

The kids are back at school (sigh of relief!), the nights are drawing in, and there is that feeling of change in the air. Autumn is fast approaching!

I think September often brings more new beginnings than January. It signals the end of carefree summer days, running around in shorts and flipflops, and brings instead alarm clocks, new starchy school trousers and routine.

And it always brings my focus back into the house. My living room which has been overlooked in favour of the garden has a slightly neglected feel, a bit dusty and unloved. It’s definitely in need of a bit of a refresh, ready for cosy nights in, the curtains drawn and the fire lit. But if, like me, you've spent more on icecreams in the last month than on your mortgage (how much for an icecream?!) any updates need to have a small price tag but be big on impact.

So to help you (and me!) out, we’ve taken a look at what’s on offer in the shops right now - what are the trends and how you can inject a bit of autumnal love into your home and still have some change left for the school dinner money!!

Colours of Autumn

Beautiful warm tones of rust and terracotta give an instant pop of autumn. Mixed with navy blues and yellow ochres, they bring a feeling of luxury and comfort. For a quick and easy update, cushions always deliver on impact. Mixing textures and patterns is the way to go; soft velvets, jumbo cord and boucles, with abstract patterns will instantly lift your living room.

Natural Textures

Natural materials like rattan, bamboo and seagrass bring the feeling of outdoors in and help with that transition from summer to autumn. The natural hues and textures bring interest to your room, and pretty much work with every style of interior. We love the bamboo and wood plant stand from Dunelm, and the light shade from Habitat that would throw amazing patterns onto your walls. And if your budget allows, the rattan armchair from Zara would be perfect for updating a corner of your room with a velvet cushion and cosy throw. Yes please!

Make a Splash with Autumnal Accessories

For an update on a small budget, accessories are always the way forward! If neutrals are your thing, then update with bubble texture and reactive glaze finishes. Gold and amber tones add warmth and really glow in the autumn sunshine, and candles always create a welcoming atmosphere as the nights draw in.

Accent Armchairs

For a high impact update, an accent chair is just the thing to add a pop of colour or texture to your room. Great in living rooms, bedrooms, hallways - just about anywhere you have an empty corner, they can bring a different focus to your room, and provide you with a whole different aspect to your house. To add cosy vibes to your room, boucle fabric is really popular. Generally in neutral tones, it's a curly knotted yarn that maximises texture on your upholstery. If you’re not ready for an armchair in boucle fabric just yet, you could opt for a pop of burnt orange velvet on your accent chair and accessorise with a boucle cushion.
