How using an interior designer can save you time - and give you your sanity back!

Written by Catherine Seagrave

Researching, planning and designing a room takes time and the decisions can feel overwhelming.

We love speaking to new customers and hearing about the plans for their home, but so often we hear them expressing the same problem - lack of time. Just yesterday we spoke to a new customer who was so excited to have moved into her new apartment, but also completely daunted by the task ahead. She was really eager to transform the space into her home but also completely aware that she just didn’t have the time. The reality of empty rooms, tired paintwork and mismatched furniture quickly turns the feelings of excitement into feelings of despair.

I don’t know anybody who doesn’t have a busy life, and more and more people are having to delegate and outsource tasks to free up time. Using an interior designer is no different! You may not have considered it before but it may be just the helping hand you need. Read on to see if you can identify with any of these problems, and see if working with an interior designer could help you save precious time and feel less ‘stuck’.

1. No time to research and plan - and don’t know what to research and plan!

Home is such an emotional word, and means so much to us all. You know that you want your home to be comfortable and welcoming and just feel right. But how to get to that point is less straightforward. Often our customers have previously invested considerable time researching different styles and options, only to feel that they end up down different rabbit holes, completely confused with different options, and their head spinning! Hitting the shops can be little better, with the blind leading the blind, not knowing what to look for or whether it will all work together. And all the while eating up lots and lots of time!!

When you work with us at The Living House, we do the hard work for you. We have already done the research, and know where to look. You benefit from the knowledge and information we have from years in the industry. We know the right questions to ask you to determine what you want and most importantly, need from your home - and we know where to find it.

2.  You’re scared of getting it wrong, which brings on design paralysis!

Maybe in the past you have been guilty of ‘the impulse buy’. I’m sure we all have! You see something and fall in love with it, but when you bring it home it doesn’t have the impact you were hoping for, and doesn’t somehow work with the other things you have in the room. You begin to lose confidence in your decisions and don’t know what to do next. So you stop doing anything - design paralysis!

We are all very emotionally invested in our homes and want to get it right. Without a plan it’s easy to stray into the territory of buying a collection of things we like that simply don’t go together! Using an interior designer can really help you here. As we aren’t so emotionally connected to your home, we can take a step back and see what really matters. We can put a design together that you can follow, so you can regain your confidence and know that the time you spend on your home will have the results you want. When you work with us you won’t make the wrong design decisions, or spend more time trying to rectify them.

3.  When you look you can only find things way out of your budget

Oh, I know how demoralising this can feel! You have found some spare time to have a look around, or browse the beautiful homes on Instagram, only to realise you’ll need to remortgage the house to ever be able to afford the look you want.

Again, this is where we can help. Often there are look-alikes that we know of, or ways of cheating the look! We can save you time and money sharing our knowledge of different shops and ways to achieve the look, on your budget.

4.  You can’t imagine how the room could look, so you draw a blank

This can really bring your plans to a halt, and stop you from moving forward. Our customers have often gathered samples of wallpaper they like, or paint colour charts, and they have looked at different sofas in a range of different colours. They have invested a lot of time considering all these different elements but they fall at the final hurdle because they just can’t imagine how it will all look together. The headache comes on and they stuff the samples back in the envelope and shove it in a drawer!!

It can be a really difficult task to hold all these different colours and styles in your mind's eye and at the same time see it all together in front of you. It has taken interior designers years to be able to do this, and imagine what isn’t there! At The Living House you can benefit from our expertise - and to make it as easy as possible, we put images together to help you visualise how it can look - so you have the confidence to see your room how we see it!

5.  You don’t know what you want (or you do, but it’s very different from your partner!!)

Without a focus you can waste a lot of time going round in circles. Add to this  the complications of a difference of opinion from your nearest and dearest and it’s a difficult path to navigate!! Working your way through this can fill you with dread, and the desire to avoid an argument can mean that your home project just goes nowhere.

The good news is that we can lend a helping hand. By talking to you both and really understanding what you want to achieve in your home, we can suggest a design that won’t feel like a compromise to anyone! And once you know where you’re headed, each decision is easier. You can remain focussed on your goals of creating a beautiful home - and side step the arguments.

6.  Your home plans get pushed to the back of the queue as your commitments pile up

Work, family, children, pets, social life, life admin… the list is endless. Time just disappears! Carving out dedicated time to invest in your home is so difficult when other commitments can be so demanding (I know, I have 3 kids!!). Often you know that your home isn’t working for you and is actually making all these things harder, but claiming time back to make the changes you need is just impossible.

And so you need to delegate. Remove it from your ‘to do’ list! Call on the professionals to ease the pressure, so you can concentrate on everything else. What would take you weeks or months, we can achieve in days. Once we have finalised your brief, we will have your design back to you in 14 days!! In just 2 weeks you will have a new design for your room; with a shopping list that you can action straight away, images to help you imagine how it will look and feel, and style notes so you know exactly how to achieve it. It’s fast, easy and gives you back the thing you really need right now - time!!!
