A showcase of the best Victorian hallways around

Grand entrances, stained glass windows, ornate woodwork and tiled floors - what's not to love about period properties? We are seeing lots of people restore these historic buildings to their original glory whilst also giving them a contemporary twist and we love it!
In the Arts & Crafts movement at the late end of the Victorian period people believed in the beauty of craftsmanship and well-made pieces, often inspired by nature & simplicity. The movement saw homes of this era having more decorative woodwork including cornicing, panelling and ceiling roses. It also featured amazing front doors and detailed stained glass windows. It was a celebration of craftsmanship and a resistance to mass production. It is lovely when it is possible to preserve these decorative original features of a home and honour its history.
When you have a property with a bit of history it is important to get the balance right between being sympathetic to its time and putting your own stamp on it. If you are lucky enough to live in a property with character you might feel overwhelmed with the possibilities and need a bit of guidance to get you started!
Let us show you some of our favourite examples of modern Victorian hallways that make an amazing first impression!
1. It’s all in the detail
This hallway in Plymouth has a simple elegance to it however when you look closely at the detail there is lots going on. The intricate original pattern on the staircase is so interesting and highlighted by the black paint which is repeated on the bannister and bottom section of the wall. This contrasts so well with the off white paint and bold geometric tiles on the floor. In many Victorian homes you will find classic Minton tiles which we love. They create an instant wow when you enter the home and set the tone for the rest of the property. You might be lucky enough to find some hidden underneath flooring that has been laid over the top (we don’t know why someone would do this!), so it’s best to check before you spend any money. You can repair broken tiles and get them restored and cleaned by a professional. If you don’t find any tiles, you have a blank slate to add your own design here and perhaps you could go for something a little bit different to add your personality. We love the tiles seen here in a blue and terracotta geometric design. It still feels in keeping with the Victorian style, however the larger scale geometric pattern brings it right up to date.

2. Bold & colourful
This bold and interesting hallway includes all the original features that you would expect of a house of this age. Tiled floor, ceiling rose, stained glass windows, panelling and picture rails. It is far from old and stale though as it has been brought right up to date with amazing bold colour choices in the wallpaper and paint. The wallpaper follows a similar pattern to that of a William Morris design but this wallpaper from Sanderson has bright pink, coral, purple and greens to make it feel very current. They have continued the pink into the panelling which unifies the space and contrasts so well against the striking tiled floor.

3. Pop of colour

We love this example of a Victorian hallway that feels really fresh, light and bright. Unlike the previous two examples, the owners of this home have taken this in a neutral direction on the walls and stairs which instantly modernises the space. They have then added colour on the bannister and in accessories such as the amazing gallery wall going up the stairs. The simple panelling gives a nod to history but it is very subtle and understated.

In this home we see a pop of colour but instead of light and bright it is dark. The dark paint has been used above the panelling which really makes you notice the amazing height that Victorian homes are known for.

4. Lighting
In this example we love the mix of old and new. The contrast of the decorative cornicing and the modern light fixture is something to behold. The brass hardware and the white orb shades repeat colours that appear in other areas of the hallway to really create that show stopping entrance!
