1. Hide away the ‘stuff’ in the room

Many of us work from home now more than ever. When Covid hit lots of people had to make space in their home to work pretty much overnight and this disrupted how we use our homes. Some of us were lucky to have a dedicated office in our home which made things easier, however lots of us had to work from the spare bedroom (and are currently back there again!).

When starting to think about how to get your spare bedroom ready for your guests, we would recommend clearing all work related equipment from the room. This could mean relocating it to another space in your home or physically putting it away in a wardrobe. We want to make sure our guests feel comfortable in the space rather than imposing on your working environment.

If you are unable to move all the equipment completely perhaps look at ways to hide it instead. If you want to hide a desk and computer you could look at folding screens which don’t take up too much space and look great. For smaller work related objects such as notebooks and pens you could find some interesting baskets to store things in whilst you aren’t using them.

2. Make the bed cosy

The bed is often the main focal point of a bedroom. Creating a cosy bed is a really easy update which will impress your guests.

Start by updating your bedding. When you go to a hotel they often have beautiful crisp white bedding which immediately oozes luxury. Try to mimic the hotel look when making your bed. Invest in good quality bed linen with the highest thread count you can afford and buy Oxford bordered pillowcases to elevate the look.

There are small things you can do to improve the appearance of your bed. Even the way that you position your pillows changes the look. If you prop up your pillows so they are standing more upright against your headboard it will make the bed feel more styled.

Once you have the bedding sorted it's time to dress the bed. You don’t need to go overboard here, just a couple of decorative cushions in front of your pillows will do the trick. Finish with a lovely throw draped over the bottom third of the bed.

3. Create some storage space

One tip your guests will really appreciate is to give them a place to store their belongings. If you're staying somewhere for a few days it can be a bit annoying to live out of a suitcase. Your guest might have a sparkly dress for Christmas day which they want to hang up to stop it getting creased.

If you're able to, clear out a bit of wardrobe space and let your guests know where they can hang their clothes. If you are short on storage you could purchase a clothes rail. They are really useful and can be taken down and stored away when not in use. Even a couple of hooks and coat hangers on the back of the bedroom door are really useful.

4. Add an area for a quiet moment alone

Christmas is a time for celebrating with our loved ones, seeing friends and family, eating too much and being merry. It can be quite busy and full on and sometimes we want to pause for a relaxing moment. When staying in someone else’s home it can be tricky to relax if you are around everyone else all the time so it is important to make your guest room feel like a little retreat whilst they are staying.

Create a relaxing space in the room. This could be a reading nook, or a window seat. By adding a little armchair to the bedroom you are giving your guests permission to spend some time by themselves. For an extra touch leave a few of your favourite books on a little table for them to read.

5. Don’t forget the lighting

Next to the armchair make sure to add a floor or table lamp. Lighting is really important and can change the way you feel in a space.  Layered lighting can elevate a room and create the cosy atmosphere you want for your guests.

6. Window dressings - privacy please!

As a guest bedroom is often used infrequently, sometimes the windows can be left bare. Think about what's at the window and is this sufficient for your guests' privacy? As this is a bedroom we would always recommend blackout curtains or blinds to stop the light streaming in in the morning.

You can pick up inexpensive ready made curtains or blinds from shops such as John Lewis and Dunelm for standard sized windows. Make sure you measure the window before heading out..

To ensure you get the right size, simply measure your window across the width in three places, i.e top, middle and bottom. Repeat this with the height on the left side, middle and right side. Write these measurements down and take them with you to the shops where they will be able to help you choose the perfect size for your window.

7. Go the extra mile!

Your guests will really love it if you add a few little extras to the bedroom; cosy slippers, fluffy towels, bathrobes, a kettle, snacks, fresh flowers and candles! If you really want to spoil your guest you could make it feel like a swanky hotel room with a chocolate on the pillow!
